Eric Blue

Nocturnes and atmospheric landscapes, painted digitally in the tonalist tradition.

I grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and have lived in Southern California since 2001. My mom taught me to draw when I was young, in ink, chalk and charcoal. She had painted for years herself and always encouraged me to create. In my late teens my creative energy moved toward technology, which became my career for the next three decades.

In 2016 I came across a small collection of her paintings that I never knew existed. They got me painting again, and I haven't stopped since.

My work comes from a lifelong interest in nature, technology and creativity. I'm drawn to the moody atmospheres of the Tonalists, the Impressionists and other landscape painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What interests me most is the interplay of light, color and texture, and the sense of peace and solitude a landscape can hold.

Many of the paintings start on hikes along the mountains and beaches of Southern California. Others come from imagination or a photo taken along the way. I paint on iPad in Procreate, using the habits of traditional painting, and the work is then printed as fine art on canvas, acrylic and wood.

In 2021 my work was shown at Laguna Art Gallery in Laguna Beach. I live in Irvine, California.
